Behind every great idea, there are conversations that change the way you think.
As part of our FIRST LEGO League UNEARTHED project, we quickly realized that understanding archaeology required more than just online research. We needed to learn from people who work in the field every day.
So we decided to reach out.
Taking the First Step
Contacting experts was not easy at first. Writing emails to professionals felt unfamiliar, and we didn’t know if anyone would respond.
But we took the chance — and it paid off.
Out of several messages we sent, one reply led to our first real breakthrough.
Understanding the Real World of Archaeology
During our first online meeting with an archaeologist from the University of Tartu, we gained valuable insights into what archaeology really looks like beyond textbooks.
We learned that archaeology is a precise and detailed science, where everything must be carefully measured, documented, and analyzed. Once a site is excavated, it cannot be restored to its original state — which makes accuracy incredibly important.
This helped us understand why better tools and technologies could make a significant difference.
Seeing Archaeology in Practice
To deepen our understanding, we visited the Võrumaa Museum, where we explored how archaeological findings are preserved and presented.
We discovered how important visualization is — from mapping and photography to presenting results in a way that others can understand. This experience showed us that archaeology is not just about discovering the past, but also about communicating it.
Exploring the Role of Artificial Intelligence
Later, we had the opportunity to discuss our ideas with experts working with artificial intelligence in archaeology.
We learned how AI models are trained using data and how they can be used to identify patterns in images and landscapes. We also discovered that one of the biggest challenges is not the technology itself, but the quality and structure of the data.
These conversations helped us realize that our idea was not only interesting — it was also realistic.
Why These Conversations Mattered
Talking to experts changed our perspective.
Instead of guessing, we were able to:
-
understand real problems
-
validate our ideas
-
learn from real-world experience
-
improve our solution
It also showed us that innovation is not created alone — it grows through collaboration and shared knowledge.
What We Took Away
One of the most important lessons from this experience was simple:
Don’t be afraid to ask.
Reaching out to experts opened doors we didn’t expect and gave our project a much stronger foundation.
It reminded us that behind every field — whether it’s archaeology or technology — there are people who are willing to share their knowledge and support new ideas.
